AMERICAN TOURING
SPECIALTIES PROJECTS
The Hogarty Camaro is a project that most
builders dream of. We are given a few project guide
lines, a budget limitation, and told to run. Bill’s
Camaro will be nothing short of impressive for a street
car. His requirements were to be able to have a great
handling street car, be able to waste any opposition
from a 60mph roll, and have a true Vintage Trans Am look
about it, down to the fender flares. The Chassis is up
to ATS to sort out to our build style.
With the vehicle getting an alcohol injected tall
deck big block chevy engine, we knew a great handling
front clip would be needed. A Call to Wayne Due’s
Chassis Shop yielded us the suspension we were looking
for. Following our minimal compromise suspension
standards we had Wayne build us a custom 1 off clip that
uses C5 corvette parts. We had the clip retain the
geometry of a C5 Corvette by leaving the front mounted
rack and pinion in the OEM location. This requires an
engine setback of 6 inches into the firewall, but the
weight distribution ends up being better, so it is worth
the fabrication involved. Out back we chose a Dana 44
IRS from a 96 Corvette mated to a Wayne Due install kit.
We upgraded the links with stronger units from
Guldstrand, and installed CF half shafts, ince the
engine is making shy of 1000hp. We mocked up the T56 and
Pyar engine block, and installed all the parts with
engine plates. It goes back up to Pleasanton for
sheetmetal work, and body work. The wheels were 20x10
and 20x13 front to rear.
